The areas of Languedoc-Roussillon is steeped in history, with rich architectural heritage ranging from Roman to Romanesque, beautiful gentle coastline with sandy beaches and traditional fishing villages. Inland is quieter with acres of vineyards and mountain walks. The perfectly restored medieval town of Carcassonne, is breathtakingly beautiful, with turrets and ramparts overlooking the Basse Ville. Perpignan is the vibrant capital of Roussillon, and has a distinct Catalan feel, as do many of the towns close to the Spanish border, Catalan is also spoken here, in fact it is only a few hours drive to the Spanish (Catalan) towns of Gerona and Barcelona.
